What is the evil eye in Islam?

The evil eye refers to the harm that is caused by someone’s envy. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) clearly stated:

“‏ الْعَيْنُ حَقٌّ وَلَوْ كَان شَىْءٌ سَابَقَ الْقَدَرَ سَبَقَتْهُ الْعَيْنُ وَإِذَا اسْتُغْسِلْتُمْ فَاغْسِلُوا ‏”

The evil eye is real, and if something is against the divine command, it is the evil eye (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2188)

The Prophet’s teachings on protection from envy

The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has clearly told us that the evil eye is a real thing and has also told us its cure. Translation: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2708)

Usage: We should recite this verse three times in the morning and evening to seek Allah’s protection.

Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing will prevent him from entering Paradise except death.” Narrated by An-Nasa’i, and Ibn Habbab also declared it authentic. Surah Al-Baqarah is a comprehensive shield.

مَنْ قَرَأَ آيَةَ اَلْكُرْسِيِّ دُبُرَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ مَكْتُوبَةٍ لَمْ يَمْنَعْهُ مِنْ دُخُولِ اَلْجَنَّةِ إِلَّا اَلْمَوْتُ (رَوَاهُ النَّسَائِيُّ ، وَصَحَحَهُ اِبْنُ حِبَّان)

Usage: We should recite this supplication after every obligatory prayer to make it our daily shield.

Surah Al-Falaq (113) – Protection from envy and jealousy

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ ﴿١﴾ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ﴿٢﴾ وَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ ﴿٣﴾ وَمِنْ شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ ﴿٤﴾ وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ٥﴿٥﴾

Translation: Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn from the evil of all that He has created, and from the evil of the night when it creeps in, and from the evil of the women who blow on groups, and from the evil of the envious when he envies.

Usage: We should recite this supplication three times in the morning and evening to seek Allah’s protection.

Surah An-Nas (114) – Protection from whispers

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ ﴿١﴾ مَلِكِ النَّاسِ ﴿٢﴾ إِلَهِ النَّاسِ ﴿٣﴾ مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ ﴿٤﴾ الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ ﴿٥﴾ من الْجِنَّةِ وَالْنَاسِ ﴿٦﴾

Translation: Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who turns away, the whisperer in the hearts of people, whether from among the jinn or humans.

Usage: We should recite this supplication three times along with Surah Falaq, especially before going to sleep, so that we may remain under the protection of Allah throughout the night.
