What is Surah Al-Waqiah?

There are only two types of surahs in the Holy Quran, Meccan and Medinan. This depends on whether they were revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in Mecca or Medina. Almost all scholars consider Surah Al-Waqiah to be a Meccan surah because it clearly describes the events of the Day of Judgment. Waqi’ah means a major event or the Day of Judgment. This surah clearly states that on the Day of Judgment, people will be divided into three groups:

The Righteous: The righteous who will receive great reward and honor.

The Left-Handed: Those who will be punished and subjected to hardship.

The Most Advanced: The most righteous who will receive a special place in Paradise and closeness to Allah.

This surah mentions the rewards of Paradise, such as comfortable thrones, sweet fruits, and countless blessings, while it also mentions the severe punishment for those who do evil deeds.

Why was Surah Al-Waqiah revealed?

Al-Waqi’ah means a great event or a great accident, that is, the day that is a sign of the coming of the Hour. When this Surah was revealed, the people of Mecca were deeply immersed in worldly matters and did not believe in the Hour. Therefore, Allah Almighty revealed Surah Al-Waqiah to guide them so that all their doubts would be removed.

At the beginning of this Surah, a very strong announcement is made that when that great event occurs, no one will be able to deny it.

This verse means that no matter how much people deny the Hour, when that Day comes, no one will be able to change its truth, and then they will not even get a chance to repent. Surah Al-Waqiah presents the entire scene of the Hour clearly. It tells us what the reality of Paradise and Hell is, and on the Day of Judgment, every person will get the result according to their deeds, that is, whoever does good will go to Paradise and whoever does evil will go to Hell.
